The Challenges of Pharmacology Training in Medical Education

Pharmacology training is essential for medical students, often involving animal testing. However, these experiments place a significant burden on institutions in terms of staffing, facilities, and financial resources, making them an increasing concern in recent years.

There is growing momentum worldwide to eliminate animal testing from an animal welfare perspective. Animal testing in student training has been almost entirely discontinued in the U.S. and Europe, particularly in American medical university departments and medical schools. The push for alternatives is also growing stronger in Japan.

What is BMP-VR?

BMP-VR, or Basic Medicine Practice - Virtual Reality, is a virtual reality-based pharmacology training system developed through joint research with Shimane University Faculty of Medicine and Avantec Co., Ltd. and provided by ERISA Corporation.
The software is integrated into Meta VR headsets, allowing users to conduct pharmacology training in a virtual environment. BMP-VR enables users to train without the risk of animal bites or needle injuries. BMP-VR also removes the need for physical equipment and chemical agents, eliminating the requirement for pharmaceutical storage facilities.

Key Features of BMP-VR

1.Addresses challenges in traditional pharmacology training

Traditional pharmacology training using animal testing comes with significant costs, including personnel expenses, purchasing and replacing outdated equipment, and expenses for acquiring, raising, and handling laboratory animals.
Regulations on animal testing have become increasingly strict worldwide for animal welfare. In light of such challenges, Avantec developed BMP-VR under the supervision of Professor Koichiro Wada from the Department of Pharmacology at Shimane University Faculty of Medicine.
BMP-VR requires only a VR headset with the software installed, eliminating the need for experimental equipment and laboratory animals while also reducing the number of instructors needed for training.

2.Enables repetitive experiments without live animals

BMP-VR-based pharmacology training virtualizes all drugs, equipment, and animals, eliminating the need to manage physical drugs and equipment or purchase and house laboratory animals. This innovation marks a major shift in pharmacology training methods.
Virtual animals allow students to repeat experiments as many times as needed until they are confident in the process. This method enables learning through trial and error—an experience difficult to achieve in traditional animal testing. The ability to practice freely enhances learning effectiveness by making concepts more memorable.

Simulation-based training also provides clear results efficiently and shortens learning time by eliminating delays from waiting for live animal testing results.

3.Includes pre-designed training exercises by Professor Koichiro Wada

BMP-VR includes a set of training exercises from Professor Koichiro Wada from the Department of Pharmacology at Shimane University Faculty of Medicine.
These exercises cover everything students need to complete training and submit reports, removing the burden from universities and medical schools to create new assignments.
Exercises are available immediately after purchase.

4.Expands features through software updates

BMP-VR is a software-based product, meaning new features and bug fixes are delivered through software updates.
The February 2024 update added three new drug types and implemented eight drug variations. Future updates will introduce more drug types, expand research patterns, and enhance virtual animals with individual variations.
